hello, world
Hello, world! After my rapid ascension to fame1 on the niche microblogging site Bluesky and remembering that attention stresses me out, I’ve decided that longform content is a healthier container for my hypomania and neuroses than instant forms of publishing. Hence this experiment, my ✨blog ✨.
But first, what have I learned from microblogging/Bluesky?
- While consistency and repetition play important roles in building a ‘brand,’ this doesn’t necessarily mean that I have to restrict myself to one theme. I found success by sharing my earnest enthusiasm about a large range of topics, namely spiders and insects, Hello Kitty, the animated TV show “Home Movies” (1999 - 2004), the movie Hellraiser (1987), beadwork, and a fictional story about my husband Gary who died under mysterious circumstances. My spouse is dead, in that he never was alive, he never existed; but his lore is very much a living breathing thing that evolves with the input of my internet friends.
- My doodles receive more traction than they do on Instagram, perhaps because Bluesky is a text-based platform with fewer visual artists competing in the attention economy.
- When Discord servers aren’t the source of interpersonal drama (lol), they’re neat spaces to vent, try out bits, and ask for feedback.
After some much-needed introspection (…and a couple account deletions), I decided to limit the time I spend on microblogging. I look forward to exploring what else I enjoy writing about.
I accumulated over 500 followers: a humble sum to many, but one I consider a win for my brain worms.↩
