bugs

I was thinking about my interest in insects and spiders (“bugs”1) and realized that part of the reason that they’re so appealing to me is that you don’t need to travel father than your backyard or your neighborhood to observe them. Much like your breath is a meditation tool that you can reliably take with you everywhere, bugs are everywhere in places that sustain life. Bugs are at the park, around your home, around work… sometimes you get lucky and are blessed with a ✨ceiling spider✨ that keeps you company during a dark night of the soul. I learned recently that outdoor spiders usually have no interest in entering our “cozy” homes and that indoor spiders have likely always been indoor spiders—it’s where they were born and it’s all that they know. Heartwarming, or Plato’s cave, or both, or something much more complicated, etc. etc. it’s spiders all the way down.

  1. yeah yeah I know that spiders are arachnids, and I’ve read the wiki page for true bugs. I hope that some day we live in a world where it’s acceptable to use “bugs” as a catchall term for insects and spiders since most people who like one are into the other.
